Oh, and thinking outside the box! That's the fifth thing that worked for me. Let me come in again.

Experimentation, thinking outside the box, perseverance, courage, and just doing it.

...and fanatical devotion to the Pope! Let me come in again... (:

YES! This is an AWESOME post, Ross.

Something that worked really well for me to help me find my destiny was experimentation. Trying lots of different things, and really giving them an honest try, without worrying about whether any of these things was my true path or whether I could make money from it.

Trying lots of new things and paying attention to:

1. Which ones I'm good at

2. Which ones are fun

3. Which ones make me feel fulfilled

4. Which ones I get excited and passionate about

helped me find my destiny. And some of these things are changeable, too! I didn't always find marketing fun, but Seth Godin and a change in attitude made it fun for me. I now view it as writing, storytelling, and helping make the world a better place, and now it's both fun and fulfilling to me.

I love explaining things, so I used to think about maybe being a college professor, because that's all that came to my mind when I thought about being a professional "explainer". But there are so many other ways that I can use that fun skill! I'm now a professional communication educator (I didn't even know such a thing existed, much less that I could be it) and I get to explain things in all sorts of ways to all sorts of people via all sorts of media.

And how did I make it happen? Experimentation, plus your three things: perseverance, courage, and just doing it.

It really works! It's really possible for you to find your dreams and make them happen!

@Carla - I'm the same, I have so many bookmarks that I like to go back to and re-read!

@Eric - I'm glad you got something out of it. Sometimes it's when we least expect it that a spark of encouragement comes from unexpected places. All the best for the direction you head in next year - I'm expecting big things from you, don't let me down!

You the man, Ross! :-)

Great stuff and very timely. I'm at a crossroads with future success and passion on one side and 'safety' mixed with some frustration and boredom on the other. Your post inspired me to continue on my heading for the 'less certain' road as I pursue my passions and dreams. Thanks for the boost! Eric.

@Ian - I like the quote, and also your comments on destiny - as you mention, 'greatness' is not always the same thing to different people.

@Chris - Cheers, mate - thanks for taking the time to comment!

@Vincent - I'd hate to think I missed out on an amazing life because I didn't 'go for it'. Thanks for your thoughts...

@Bunny - And the easy path is sometimes to sit back and do nothing... but I think the one that is ultimately far more rewarding, is to just go for it! Thanks for commenting!

I feel we as individuals are in control of our own destiny.
We can either sit back and settle or spring in to action and make it happen.

Awesome post

Hey Ross,

"Just do it"

"Destiny is 99% preparation and 1% execution."

I find that the 2 above quotes seems to link together. When we are so prepared and have done so much research, all we need to do is to just do it! That is the 1% execution that is important to achieve something. Somehow there are also people who lack the 1%. They are probably suffering from analysis paralysis or just lack the courage to take the one last step.

Cheers

Ross,

What an inspiring post!

I like the positive affirmations you present at the end. I particularly live by the "Don't settle for second best" one - why should you? AIM HIGH, THINK BIG!

There is a saying you have probably heard "shoot for the moon and if you miss you'll land amongst the stars"

Nice one,

Chris
