Want to know the best way to handle a hangover? I’ll give you the answer in this post, but I’m warning you - you may not like it!
Where I live in Australia, there is a huge drinking culture. Recently the government raised taxes on pre-mixed drinks like vodka cruisers etc. in an attempt to curb the binge drinking, particularly in teenagers. The result seems to be that instead of drinking pre-mixed drinks, people buy whole bottles of spirits/liquor to split amongst their friends, meaning they are ultimately drinking more.
I’ve been in a position through my work to be able to see the after effects of drinking first hand. I’ve had to say “I’m sorry” to a teenager’s family: crying beside his bed-side because their son, on a ventilator with massive head injuries from a drunken car crash, won’t be alive in a few hours time. I’ve seen a 16 year old girl bruised, dirty, completely unconscious and barely breathing who will probably end up with a hypoxic brain injury from the massive amounts of alcohol she consumed. I’ve seen horrible glass cuts to faces, head injuries, broken bones, loss of limbs, loss of vision, sexual assault - all from alcohol.
Am I completely anti-alcohol? No, in fact you can read about one unfortunate alcohol related experience I had when I was younger, but if I’d had the chance to see the things I have now, my previous lifestyle choices would have been much better. I don’t mind having a beer after work on a hot day, some white wine with dinner, a few drinks when hanging with friends.
But here’s the key. Listen up because this is important! (I’m going to say this softly so I don’t scare you away) The way to beat a hangover is to… drink less. That’s it! Don’t get upset with me if you expected a miracle cure - the real answer is to get a little self-control in your life, and drink less!
Is this easy to do? I’ll leave that for you to decide. But I can tell you the severity of your hangover will be directly related to the amount of alcohol you consumed the night before! Is this really a revelation? Of course not, but it’s a good reminder for all of us.
Regarding other specifics of what makes a hangover better/worse, shorter lasting, less intense - I’ll leave that debate for another day. For today, try and understand where I’m coming from & try to make smart drinking choices. Oh, and by the way - your kids are watching.

I am the type who can drink like a fish and never get a hangover. In fact even after drinking a massive amount of alcohol several years ago, I was fresh as a daisy the next morning. I think that’s the most dangerous because my body didn’t give me any warning signals to stop drinking at the time. Even though I felt fine hours later, I still could have had alcohol poisoning, brain, organ damage, etc. Since then, I had cut way back and cut out spirits and DRINK LESS.
Hi Carla - it’s a bit like the story you always hear of someone’s grandfather who lived to 130 and smoked 50/day his whole life, the rationale being that smoking=longevity when really it’s just an anomaly! Thanks for your comment.
Hi …
The thing about binge drinking it is so unhealthy but dangerous. It impairs our behaviors.
You think you are fine to drive and for some reason women think they can keep up with men drinking. We(women)are effected sooner because it take us less to become drunk.
Date rape and violence is usually connected to alcohol.
Moderation is the key.
