@Steve - Interesting that you link integrity with acting before thinking... I would have thought that had more to do with I guess maturity, or character... I guess it's all a little hand-in-hand though.

As you mention, security and acting out of desperation certainly plays a part in how we behave in life... Cheers for visiting

It's great that people want to act with integrity. I think that a common reason for not acting with integrity is that sometimes we react before we think. The only way to get better in this area is to become a better person, rather than thinking 'next time I'll act differently'. This might seem like an odd statement, but for me, change has happened as I've learned that other people are as important as I am, whoever they are. So if I see beyond the outside of someone, I can more easily ignore the annoying stuff we often tend to see in people. Also, if I'm not secure in life, I'm bound to think I have to use whatever tools are neccessary to get what I want. If however I want what's best for other people, I don't need to lie, spin, bully etc - the usual list of stuff that factors in all kinds of politics, from government to offices!
It's actually much easier to live with integrity than without! No need for an awesome memory to keep track of what I've said to who, for a start!

@Tim - Hi, thanks for visiting. Great comment - "if you don't have integrity and honesty, what DO you have?"

I totally agree that it is a single fundamental core component that can shape or make/break the rest of our lives..

And yes - I'd be pretty mad (and have been!) when no note is left on my car ;)

Ross, Great email.

I think integrity is EVERYTHING. Its really the only thing.

If you don t have intergity and honesty.. what DO you have?
Show me any good relationship without it( business or personal)

In my mind, your handshake means integrity.
If you do what you say you ll do.. thats integrity

I think most people with integrity.. will have the morals, the ethics etc etc.
The degree of those depends on the quality of the individual.

Sadly.. in America many of the parents are not teaching the CORE good stuff to the kids, and we reap what we sow.

My stepdaughter . we are teaching her as best we can to be a woman of integrity and to do the right thing.
It pretty much ties into the "golden rule" doesnt it?

Do you want someone to lie to you? To cheat you? To steal from you, etc.etc?
Of course not. Then do the same and respect the golden rule.

Here is a test: scratch someones car or take out their rear view mirror. No one sees you. Do you leave a note for the owner to contact you and make things right?

Would you be mad if that happened to you, and no note was left?

Really interesting topic! Integrity is something that's so important, but it's something I don't think much about. I love the points you've made here and some of the quotes you've included are great.

<abbr><em>positively present’s last awesome blog post.. <a href="http://www.positivelypresent.com/2009/06/trust-oh-what-a-heavy-word-so-loaded-with-implications-and-complications.html" rel="nofollow">trust me: to be happy you need to trust</a></abbr></em>
